Oh No, William And Mary Won't Do

I never liked Al Groh. He and Charlie The Hutt epitomize the arrogant NFL coach who thinks he can just waltz into college football and win ten or eleven a year without even trying hard.

Not so much, and no way Groh survives this score, which is easily the biggest shocker of opening week: William & Mary 26, Virginia 14.

Congrats to a FCS team! Less scholarships, less money, less exposure, but a whole lot more heart.

Whoa. I guess I'll have to follow my Alma Mater's football fortunes this year. Are we going to be any good, then? We've been I-AA good much of the time, but this is new.

1. I have dear friends who are W&M alumni, and I'm happy for them.

2. ROLL, TIDE, ROLL!

Maybe W&M will be good enough to keep their feather logo.

Creative destruction underway in Charlottesville. We've been hoping for a catalyst to get Groh to Go. This should do it, and together with the joke that is UVA basketball, might be enough to put some well-deserved heat on AD Craig Littlepage. Littlepage may survive because of success in non-revenue sports, however.

It occurred to me over the weekend that Virginia could do a whole lot worse than hiring Tommy Tuberville as their next head coach. I'd figured he was headed down to Miami, but after the big win over FSU last night, a Tubs return to Coral Gables is looking a lot less likely.

UVA folks, since I've got some of your ears here (thanks, Glenn!), what do you think?

As a UVA alum (CLAS '99), this is truly rock bottom. Actually, I thought they already hit bottom before - Wyoming two years ago, Duke last year. How on earth did Groh last this long in the first place? The Hoos have sunk back to the pre-George Welch depths.

Just ask Bill Callahan how easy it is.

Thanks but in lieu of Tuberville I'd rather grab Jon Tenuta. His reputation was/is one of no-nonsense at Ga Tech and at Notre Dame. He played defensive back in Charlottesville in the late 70s/early 80s. I'd rather have a guy that knows and understands (from experience) what UVa wants from their program, and he just might be the Welsh kind of guy that comes and stays for a while. I don't think Tuberville is that guy.
